space to think

A Relational Field Guide for Educators

Education is relational work. Everything that matters - the learning, the leading, the listening, the hard conversations - happens between people. And yet the conditions that shape those relationships often go unnoticed and unattended.

Space to Think is for educators who want to pay closer attention to what happens in them, between them and around them. Not a textbook. Not a framework. A small, carefully crafted field guide designed to be carried, returned to and to think with.

It covers seven themes - self-awareness, listening, trust, what happens between us, feedback, the conversations that matter most and wellbeing. They are the interconnected ways of showing up, present in the work, whether we attend to them or not.

How to use it

There isn’t a single ‘right’ way to enjoy this collection of essays.

You may read it cover‑to‑cover, let the chapters build on one another, or open directly to the one that feels most relevant to where you are now. The prompts at the end of each chapter are invitations rather than tasks. Sit with one alone, write in the dot-grid pages or bring a question into conversation with a colleague.

This book isn’t meant to be ‘finished’. It’s a reusable thinking partner for those moments when the pace of the day doesn’t allow deeper reflection. The only requirement is that you bring your own experience; the ideas here are simply a starting point for what you notice and value.

Why this field guide?

There is no shortage of books about education and leadership. What is rarer is something that slows down rather than speeds up, one that trusts the reader to think rather than telling them what to do.

Space to Think does not offer a model, a method or a set of steps. It offers something different: a way of noticing. The kind of noticing that changes how we listen, how we build trust, how we show up in the conversations that matter most.

It’s written for the reality of educational life - the pressure, the pace, the relational complexity, without pretending any of it is simple. It takes seriously the inner life of the person doing the work, not just the work itself.

And it is small enough to actually read. To carry in a bag, keep on a desk and return to between meetings. Because the best resource is the one you use.

Small in size and large in intention.

Full of insight and rich with reflection.
